Nigeria’s Adeagbo Has Bumpy Ride Into Olympic History

Africa’s long-awaited first Winter Olympics appearance in the women’s skeleton event has come to pass, with Nigeria’s Simidele Adeagbo sliding in heats one and two on Friday evening in PyeongChang, ending in 20th position.
Adeagbo, who only took up the sport six months ago, recorded times of 54.19s and 54.58s on an extremely cold night at the track, with the temperatures dipping below zero and ensuring a blistering pace on the hard ice.
She was the final competitor to race in heat one, the last of the 20 sliders, and in the first run she found the going a bit bumpy as she connected with the side of the track, though was not knocked off her sled.
In the second heat a few minutes later, Adeagbo was the first to fling herself headfirst down the ice, but could not improve on her time despite the vocal support of the Nigerian bobsled women at the venue.
She will have a chance to go again on Saturday though, in heats three and four.
More than one driver found their opening times affected by clipping the track with their shoulders.
Canada’s Mirela Rahneva was bumped up off her sled completely in heat one, but managed to hold on and keep going, while Korea’s Sophia Jeong found her helmet scraping along the track wall.

Arewa Consultative Forum Endorses Buhari For Second Term

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari for second term ahead of the presidential election scheduled to hold on Saturday. The forum announced its support for the President in a statement by its acting Chairman, Musa Kwande, on Tuesday. It noted that it carefully studied the antecedents of major presidential candidates, the manifestoes and policy documents of their parties, alongside the need for social, political and economic stability in the country. BREAKING: Court Grants Ex-SGF Babachir Lawal, Two Others Bail

An Abuja High Court has granted bail to the former Secretary-General of the Federation,  Babachir  Lawal and two others. The court on Wednesday granted them bail in the sum of N50m each with one surety. The sureties must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court; they must possess titles to lands within the jurisdiction of the court, show evidence of payment of tax for the past three years. The court further noted that each of the defendants is to deposit their international passport with the court pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions and are to remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mr Babachir is being accused of diverting funds meant for the clearing of evasive plants in the troubled northeast. Next trial has been fixed for March 18, 2019.
