Monitoring committee: NJC replaces Salami with Galadima
The National Judicial Council on Tuesday replaced a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, as the head of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee.
A statement by the Director of Information of the NJC, Mr. Soji Oye, stated that Salami was replaced by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Suleiman Galadima.
Galadima retired as a Justice of the Supreme Court on attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 on October 10, 2016.
The replacement followed last week’s rejection of the position by Salami.
Salami had reportedly turned in his rejection letter before a date for the 16-man committee’s inauguration could be announced.
The NJC stated on Tuesday that the committee, now led by Justice Galadima, would be inaugurated on Wednesday.
The statement read, “The National Judicial Council under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr. Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, has picked a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mr. Suleiman Galadima, as the new chairman of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee.
“He is to replace Justice Mr. Ayo Salami (retired) who excused himself from the committee as the chairman, after initially accepting to serve.
“The committee will be inaugurated on November 1, 2017 by Justice Onnoghen at the council’s conference hall by 2pm.”
The President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Abubakar Mahmoud, and some of his predecessors are members of the committee.
The ex-NBA Presidents are Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN); Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN); Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN); and Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN).
Other members of the committee are Chief Judge, Borno State, Justice Kashim Zannah; Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice P.O. Nnadi; Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marsahal Umukoro; and Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice M. L. Abimbola.
The committee also has two members of the NJC, Dr. Garba Tetengi (SAN), and Mrs. R.I. Inga; a representative of Non-Governmental Organisations; a representative of the Ministry of Justice, and a representative of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
The NJC Secretary, Gambo Saleh, will serve as the secretary of the committee.
