Metuh’s counsel calls for Daura’s arrest for failure to produce Dasuki in court

Image
Emeka Etiaba, SAN, counsel to the embattled former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olisa Metuh on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, asked Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja to order the arrest of Director General, Department of State Service (DSS) Lawal Daura, following the failure of the DSS to produce former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, in court to give evidence. The court had on October 25 directed the service of subpoena order on Dasuki and former President Goodluck Jonathan following Metuh’s application to have the duo as witnesses in the N400 million fraud case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). At the resumed sitting today, while Dasuki was not produced in court, Jonathan’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, appeared in court to challenge the subpoena issued on the former President. Addressing the court today, Etiaba asked the court to invoke the provisions of Section 244 of the Admin

Monitoring committee: NJC replaces Salami with Galadima

The National Judicial Council on Tuesday replaced a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, as the head of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee. A statement by the Director of Information of the NJC, Mr. Soji  Oye, stated that Salami was replaced by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Suleiman Galadima. Galadima retired as a Justice of the Supreme Court on attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 on October 10, 2016. The replacement followed last week’s rejection of the position by Salami. Salami had reportedly turned in his rejection letter before a date for the 16-man committee’s inauguration could be announced. The NJC stated on Tuesday that the committee, now led by Justice Galadima, would be inaugurated on Wednesday. The statement read, “The National Judicial Council under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mr. Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, has picked a retired Justice of the Suprem

Lewis slams ref for stopping Joshua, Takam

Lennox Lewis claims Anthony Joshua’s fight with Carlos Takam was stopped “way too early”,  The Sun  reports. Joshua retained his IBF, WBA and IBO world heavyweight titles with a 10th-round stoppage-win over Carlos Takam in Cardiff on Saturday. Asked about the referee’s controversial decision to step in during the 10th round on Twitter, Lewis  said,  “Of course… it was way too early! “There’s always something these days. Would have been nice just to let it play out one way or another. “Takam still looked strong and with his senses! Very good test for AJ though – especially with the broken nose.” Joshua, 28, was caught with an accidental headbutt in the second round as he fought late replacement Takam in Cardiff. And Lewis believes the experience will do him plenty of good – even if the Brit did not produce his best display. He added,  “This was just the type of fight, experience and adversity that Anthony Joshua needed. “He wasn’t at his best, but sometimes you won’t

EFCC may place bounty on ex-Pension chief

Image
As the ex-Chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, continues to evade arrest, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is considering placing a bounty on him. A senior EFCC official disclosed this to one of our correspondents on Tuesday. The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said no figure had been decided but added that attaching a reward to his arrest might be the best option as the same approach had made the whistle-blower policy successful. He said, “We are seriously considering that (placing a bounty on Maina). We have not yet decided on how much but we may resort to that if he continues to evade arrest.” Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party has said that the leaked memo from the office of the Head of Service, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, has further exposed the alleged complicity of President Muhammadu Buhari on the reinstatement of Maina into the civil service. The party said it never believed in the President

APC NEC meeting: Govs’ bid to get automatic 2019 ticket for Buhari fails

Image
A move by some governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress to use the platform of the National Executive Council of the party to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term failed on Tuesday. The APC NEC is the second highest decision-making body of the party after the national convention. Signs of what was in the offing became apparent early in the day as some governors known to be close allies of the President extended a campaign they began at an event organised by the Buhari Support Organisation in Abuja on Saturday. In separate interviews with reporters at the APC National Secretariat, the venue of Tuesday’s NEC meeting, the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Owelle Rochas Okorocha; his  Plateau and Kebbi counterparts, Simon Lalong and Atiku Bagudu, respectively said only Buhari had what it would take to fly the party’s flag in 2019. The governors spoke before the commencement of the NEC meeting. Lalong said all the governors had agre

Nigerians consume 400 million condoms yearly – SFH

Image
The Society of Family Health has said that Nigerians consume over 400 million condoms annually. Its Managing Director, Bright Ekweremadu, said this in Lagos on Tuesday. He was, however, quoted as saying that the 400 million condom consumption could fall below expectation based on the society’s estimation of unprotected sex in the country. He spoke during the launch of Flex condom, a brand that, he said, came with a lot of flavours and had more strength and could last longer during sex. Ekweremadu said, “We have been in the business of condom production for over 30 years. We have done a lot of things in educating people to embrace abstinence with our zip-up campaign. There are obviously sexually active Nigerians who may not totally abstain from sex and this led to our alternative, particularly at this time when HIV/AIDs is prevalent in the country. ”What we are doing now is expanding choices for the sexually active Nigerians who are using condoms. So we have varieties of c
